Understanding Bronze Maintenance
Bronze Maintenance or ‘cleaning’ is the blanket industry term for the maintenance of all brass/copper/bronze materials. As industry leaders in patination Capisco can provide expert advice on how to keep your facades looking pristine.
Why does patinated metal require maintenance?
Patination is a thin layer of coloured oxidised metal on the surface of a metal. Our patinations are protected by a hard wax but metals will react to local conditions over time (oxidisation) and will require some maintenance.
In particular Bronze/brass can become 'fatigued' due to exposure to pollutants, acid rain and other irritants. Regular maintenance is strongly advised as it not only keeps your facades looking their best - it is more cost effective in the long run.
At Capisco Ltd we offer a comprehensive service for the cleaning, maintenance and re-patination of all types of metalwork. We provide practical solutions and advice in the conservation and metal restoration of bronze sculptures, brass/bronze plaques and signage, shopfronts and architectural metalwork.
Often sites will require minimal restoration if regularly maintained but in cases of severe damage to the facade Capisco can offer a full re-patination service onsite.
What can you provide maintenance for?
We can offer regular maintenance contracts for both interior and exterior artworks, bronze plaques, bar-tops, shop fronts and cladding. High traffic areas such as door handles, kick-plates and metal cladding at street level can tarnish and Capisco are here to return these pieces back to their former glory.
Do you provide polishing services?
We can use traditional techniques to polish and restore raw brass back to its original condition.
What happens when I request maintenance services?
All our services are bespoke for each project. After we have inspected the site and created a report (if requested) we will work with the client to generate a maintenance program tailored to the client’s requests. When we arrive on-site we will secure the area (if required) then provide a ‘conservation clean’ and any necessary snagging of the metal.
If any sections require full restoration we will ensure a colour match. When our team are satisfied with the result we seal the metal with a coat of hard wax to protect the metal until our return.

Bespoke maintenance services. We would strongly suggest a maintenance inspection at least every 2-3 years with a re-reapplication of a hard wax. Not only will this improve the overall appearance but also provides a protective barrier.
